The House of Science
The past is a lab, and the future is the experiment.
The House of Science is one of the four major faction questlines in Starfield, representing the game's academic and research-oriented wing of post-Collapse humanity. Where Constellation chases frontiers and the Freestar Collective fights for survival, the House of Science is driven by a singular, almost obsessive question: *why* did the Anomalies happen, and can the science of the old world be recovered to fix what is broken?
As a player, you encounter the House of Science through a short introductory quest that draws you into their orbit—literally and figuratively. Accepting their invitation commits you to a multi-stage arc of investigation, fieldwork, and moral compromise that weaves into the broader mystery of the Shattered Space era.

Lore & Background
Before the Anomalies tore the stars apart, humanity's great universities and research institutes operated across a dozen systems. When the sky broke and travel became a lottery, those institutions scattered, merged, or simply vanished. The House of Science is the last institutional heir to that tradition: a self-sustaining orbital station where scientists, archivists, and engineers maintain what they can of the old canon while trying to make sense of a universe that no longer obeys its own physics.
Their philosophy is pragmatic to the point of ruthlessness. Knowledge is treated as a finite resource to be hoarded, tested, and deployed. The station's corridors are lined with salvaged data cores, half-finished prototypes, and walls of annotated star-charts that map the Anomalies' drift patterns. There is a quiet, almost monastic discipline to the place—no one argues about ideology here, only about hypotheses. That said, the faction is not without internal tension: some members want to share recovered science openly with the colonies, while others believe certain findings are too dangerous to release until the Anomalies are understood.
The House of Science sits at the intersection of Starfield's central mystery. Their research threads connect to the Anomalies, to pre-Collapse technology that predates the University of Constantine, and to questions about whether the old world's scientific establishment knew more about what was coming than they ever admitted. Joining them means trading the open-road freedom of a spacefaring adventurer for the narrow, humming corridors of a station where every answer opens three more questions.
In Their Own Story
The airlock cycled with a sound like a long exhale. Dr. Voss didn't look up from the holographic lattice she'd been rotating for the last forty minutes—a cross-section of an Anomaly's gravitational signature, rendered in pale amber light that made the station's white walls look jaundiced.
"You're the one Constellation sent," she said. Not a question. She set down her stylus. "Good. We've been waiting for someone who's actually *been* to one. The readings we pull from here are… theoretical. You've got the scar tissue. I want you to describe it. The color. The sound. The way your suit's gyros stuttered."
You described it. She wrote nothing down. She just watched, her eyes tracking the words like a scientist watching a reaction she'd predicted but never seen in the flask.
When you finished, she was quiet for a long time. Then she pulled a data core from a drawer—old, the casing scratched and warm—and set it on the bench between you.
"This is a pre-Collapse calibration log. Someone ran this experiment six months before the first Anomaly opened. The variables match what you just told me. Almost exactly."
She met your eyes. "Now you understand why I didn't want to share this with the UC. And why I need you to stay."
Reader's Guide
The House of Science questline begins when you are directed to the faction's orbital station. You'll meet the leadership, learn what they're researching, and complete a small introductory task—typically a retrieval or investigation job that proves you're reliable. Accepting their invitation locks you into the faction arc and closes the door on rival-faction alignment for that storyline.
**SPOILERS BELOW THIS POINT**
The arc unfolds in several beats. Early stages involve gathering data, visiting specific locations (a derelict research site, a restricted archive, a field observation point near an Anomaly), and making choices about how much information to share with other factions. Mid-arc, you'll face a moral fork: the House of Science possesses a piece of pre-Collapse technology or knowledge that could either stabilize the Anomalies or be weaponized. Your choice here shapes the later dialogue and the faction's final stance.
The concluding stage sends you to a significant location tied to the game's overarching mystery. What you learn there reframes the Anomalies not as a natural disaster but as something with intent—or at least with origin in a very specific, recoverable source. Your final decision determines whether the House of Science's work is published, buried, or turned over to a third party.
**Rewards:** A faction-specific weapon or armor set, a unique ship or ship upgrade, station access to a research lab, and narrative resolution of the Anomaly mystery thread. The faction also becomes a recurring source of side tasks and lore drops throughout the rest of the game.
Did You Know?
- The House of Science is one of only four major factions in Starfield, meaning committing to their questline forecloses the parallel arcs of Constellation, the Freestar Collective, and the UC for that particular storyline
- The faction's station aesthetic deliberately contrasts with the other factions: where Constellation's base feels like a lived-in crew quarters and Freestar's outpost is a fortified camp, the House of Science reads as a w
- The questline's research threads connect directly to the game's central mystery about the Anomalies, making it arguably the most lore-dense of the four faction arcs for players interested in the 'why' behind the Shattere
- The House of Science's internal philosophy—hoard knowledge until it's safe to release—creates recurring dialogue friction with the UC, which advocates for open scientific sharing, a tension that surfaces in multiple ques
