A New Beginning
One broken ship, one new name, and a universe that owes you nothing.
A New Beginning is the opening quest sequence of Starfield, the 24th-century space RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios. It places the player character aboard the USGS Constellation during a catastrophic Frame Shift Drive incident, then follows the aftermath as the survivor washes up in New Atlantis and is offered a fresh identity by the private spacefaring organization Constellation. The quest establishes the core premise of the entire game: you are a blank slate in a vast, mysterious universe, and every relationship, faction, and secret starts from this single moment of rebirth.
Functionally, it serves as the tutorial and narrative anchor from which every subsequent quest chain branches. The choices made here—how you handle the initial chaos, whether you trust Sam Coe, how you approach your first foray into open space—set the emotional tone for the hundreds of hours that follow.

Lore & Background
The Frame Shift Drive was humanity's great leap beyond the local star cluster, a technology that allowed ships to fold space and reach destinations previously unreachable. By the mid-2300s it had been in use for decades, and the USGS Constellation was one of many vessels that carried it. The incident that opens Starfield—whatever the player witnesses in those first minutes aboard the ship—shatters that comfortable assumption. The drive malfunctions, the ship is torn from its expected trajectory, and the crew is scattered. The player character survives, but barely, and the world that greets them in New Atlantis is one where the old certainties about the universe's size and structure no longer hold.
Constellation, the private organization that operates out of New Atlantis, has a long history of salvaging, exploration, and quiet diplomacy among the colony worlds. Sam Coe, their leader, is a pragmatic figure who sees in the survivor not a liability but a resource. The offer of a new name, a new ship, and a new purpose is genuine in its way, but it is also a transaction: Constellation needs people who will fly into the unknown and come back with answers. The Reliquary, the ancient structure that haunts the game's deeper mysteries, is not yet named to the player here, but its shadow is already in the room.
The broader lore context is one of a universe that is far larger and stranger than the colonial chart suggests. The Frame Shift Drive was meant to be the final frontier, but the events of the opening imply it was merely the first key. Every faction in Starfield—the Constellians, the Freestar Collective, the House of Va'ruun, the Scions—operates within a framework of assumptions that the player will gradually dismantle. A New Beginning is the moment the dismantling starts.
In Their Own Story
The alarm is not a sound so much as a vibration in the teeth, a hum that climbs through the deck plating and settles behind the eyes. You are in the corridor of the Constellation, and the corridor is no longer where it was. The stars through the porthole are wrong. You have seen those stars a hundred times in simulation, in briefing, in the quiet pride of a crew that believes it is going somewhere new. They are not new. They are not anywhere you have been.
Then the deck lurches, and the hum becomes a scream, and you are falling, and the last thing you see is the Frame Shift Drive housing splitting open like a fruit, pouring light that is not light into the corridor. You do not remember the water. You do not remember the cold. You remember only the face of the woman in New Atlantis, the one with the steady hands and the steady voice, who says your name—your new name, the one you chose in the quiet of the medical bay—and extends her palm.
"Welcome aboard," she says. And behind her, through the glass of the shipyard, the Constellation waits, her hull scarred, her engines cold, her future unwritten.
Reader's Guide
A New Beginning is the first quest you receive in Starfield, handed to you by Sam Coe in New Atlantis after the opening Constellation incident. In plain terms: you escape the damaged USGS Constellation, make your way to the settlement of New Atlantis, and accept Constellation's offer to take on a new identity and a ship. You will explore the shipyard, interact with key NPCs, and make your first trip into open space.
⚠️ SPOILERS BELOW THIS POINT
The quest has a few soft choices that shape early gameplay. How you respond to Sam Coe's questions about the incident can slightly alter dialogue, but the main path is largely linear. You will be asked to take the Constellation (the ship) for a test flight, which doubles as your first open-space tutorial. There is a moment where you can choose to press Sam for more information about the Reliquary or let the subject rest; neither choice locks you out of later content, but it sets the tone for how much exposition you receive in the early arcs.
Rewards: the Constellation ship (your first vessel), a starting weapon and armor set, access to the Constellation faction quest line, and the unlock of the open galaxy for free exploration. The quest also grants the skill points and credits needed to begin building your character's loadout. If you complete the optional side interactions in New Atlantis before leaving, you gain a small bonus in reputation with the settlement.
Did You Know?
- The opening sequence on the USGS Constellation is largely the same for every player regardless of character creation choices, making it one of the few truly shared narrative moments in an otherwise highly customizable RP
- Sam Coe's dialogue in New Atlantis references the Frame Shift Drive in terms that imply the technology is older and more poorly understood than the public narrative suggests, a thread that pays off in the game's later ac
- The ship you receive at the end of the quest, the Constellation, is not the same vessel that opens the game; it is a different, damaged ship that Constellation has been maintaining in the shipyard.
- The New Atlantis settlement where you arrive is built on a planet in the same system as the starting location, meaning the 'escape' from the Constellation incident is shorter in distance than the emotional and narrative
